Where do young feminists go when they want to be part of a community? To collaborate and network? To feel support and to channel their passion into action? To learn?
To a conference that has been designed especially for them, that's where!
The Fitzroy High School Feminist Collective would like to design and host a conference for other young people so that they too can explore issues related to gender equality. The 'Femco', as we call it, would like to build on its history of practical activism to 'create space' for discussion, debate and connection.
There has been a growing understanding in our community that issues of gender and gender-based violence need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. We see our conference as an opportunity for young people from diverse backgrounds to come together to learn about gender inequality, to talk about how to combat it, and to build a like-minded community for themselves for the future.
In 2015 our class produced a teaching resource called 'Fightback' to help teachers address issues of 'Everyday Sexism' in their schools. This conference is intended to empower young people to develop similar tools.
