The environmentally fragile and socially fragmented community of Venus Bay has been struggling for years with waste issues in relation to seasonal visitors. The population swells from 400 to 3000 over holidays and rubbish has always been a big issue. Built on dunes, locals struggle with getting nutrients for their gardens and part-timers don't want to spend relaxation time on theirs. My idea is creating a central community compost centre where those leaving at the end of weekends can drop off organic waste thus reducing landfill and giving back to the community and environment of the peninsula.

The local Venus Bay community includes permanent, part-time residents, weekenders and day visitors. This simple idea delivers multiple benefits on practical, environmental and social terms delivering a reduction in landfill, compost for local gardens and common ground, which the whole of community can connect and learn about the wild, environmentally fragile peninsula. The community has a lot of retirees and a growing number of young people buying into the area, people interested in contributing to sustainable practices. Aside from the surf club there are few truly inclusive places where everyone can give back to community and the environment.
