The project is to create an early years reading hub and reading/literacy outreach program to engage with the community, both in their community locations and provide regular specialist-led sessions onsite at St Joseph’s Primary School. This program will formalise existing relationships between the school and local kindergartens and will be available to all kinder programs in the Glen Eira area. While the aim is to help foster a love of reading from an early age, it will also provide an important, timely introduction to the school space, environment and structure, which will support a great start to school life.
St Joseph’s runs a highly successful reading program for its students and wants to socially participate with the local community assisting with the transition to school for Glen Eira families. Some kindergarten children are unable to attend reading sessions at local libraries during opening hours so the project will provide access to regular specialist-led sessions that will support them in early development of their reading skills. The program will connect with City of Glen Eira initiatives and focus on early reading utilising the learning of older students, specialist resources and an environment customised to this need at the school.
