Many members of our club do not have access to a quiet study space or an adult who can support their studies. Our club is encouraging our kids to focus on their academic results just as hard as they do their basketball. We have established positive relationships with many of the schools our kids attend, so we can jointly reinforce the importance of both study and sport. Given that kids love their basketball so much we can positively influence their approach to study - a practical, workable way to support study. We expect 15 kids per 20-hour session.

Collingwood Basketball Association sits on the doorstep of Melbourne’s inner northern housing estates.

Through basketball, we have built a supportive, caring and inclusive inner-city community that allows kids – regardless of background, means or ability – to grow as sportspeople, good citizens and future leaders.

The Homework Club is an initiative designed to reinforce the importance of study as well as sport. Sessions are held near basketball training to maximise attendance and are supported by volunteers who provide academic, broader guidance and mentoring. The older children help the younger ones and will eventually run the club as community leaders.

What’s the gender balance? Looks like a lot more boys than girls in your photo...?
