10% of Victorian families have children with Specific Learning Difficulties like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia. That’s some 650,000 Victorians facing enormous learning challenges and a gap between government, education, neuroscience, health and community services.
This project aims to bridge some critical gaps. It will include:
(1.) Outreach services for metro and regional Victorian families/kids.
(2.) A central learning space opposite Southern Cross Station to support families and teachers.
(3.) Workshops/webcasts to build parent capacity; resilience training for kids.
(4.) Small group interventions to support children’s learning
(5.) Professional development and accreditation for tutors wanting to support SLD students learning goals.

The project will enable community members including teachers and parents to gain access to learning intelligence to support children best. It will allow children to gain access to the learning support and assistance they need to learn and thrive. The community will be able to use these resources to gain the relevant support needed in a child’s learning journey. Key activities will include resources to support learning, health and mental wellbeing. The gap that currently exists will reduce. Student inclusion will decrease family/student stress and isolation. Less SLD students will disengage and leave school early.

Much needed and Well overdue....it’s so devastating to watch bright wonderful children struggle with learning, confidence and self worth.

As a parent of a child with dyslexia I am thankful that I am able to fund a specialist private tutor, knowing that not all families are able to do so. Individual explicitly taught learning interventions is critical for my sons literacy development. I am deeply saddened when I think of children whom are nit receiving the help they need which is so devestating to their confidence, self worth and in time reasearch indicates will impact on their future prosperity and mental heath. I see and hear of many schools Helping kids and providing support as best they can with the resources they have. However programs such as Closing the Gap will help further increase awareness of the issues by its central nature and also most importantly help those children critically in need.
Please vote and support this wonderful program.

A wonderful program, assisting children with learning difficulties that would normally “slip through the gaps” of schooling.

Speld helps so many kids achieve at school when they are at risk of getting left further behind. Speld helps kids who don’t get funded at school as most learning difficulties don’t receive any govt funding - speld is so needed to help fill the gap!

A much needed area for funding. Without SPELD a lot of children would be left behind .
