Our project involves running four storytelling workshops for primary school aged children during terms 2 and 3 in 2019. 15 children will be invited to each workshop. They will first learn about different narrative techniques, then choose which style suits them most and use it to create their own story. At the end of the workshops, all of the stories will be published as a book, with a CD for oral narratives. The children's work will be celebrated with a launch, which families, teachers and community, school and government leaders will be invited to attend.
The program will support both the children participating in the workshops and the broader community. The young storytellers will be from our partner organisations' existing learning support programs. They are from different schools and from diverse linguistic, cultural and faith backgrounds. This is a chance to celebrate children's voices through their stories, as well as enhance educational outcomes through developing language skills, writing techniques and visual expression. It is also a rich opportunity to bring people together, to share culture and identity, to build community across backgrounds and ages in Melbourne's West.

This is a terrific project. Writing and storytelling are a healthy and creative way for children to expresss themselves, share cultural knowledge, ideas and emotions and create something unique. It also allows children to learn valuable skills in an enjoyable way.
