Centrum Sokol would be a place for both the neighborhood and the community itself. It will aim to present at low, or no cost: senior lunches with entertainment, family activities, children’s programs (after school activities), education, art, fitness and entertainment. If successful, part of the funding would be for reconditioning of the facilities during initial months and then the programs for communities would be run. Centrum would be prepared to deliver programs in future. This fantastic opportunity makes us hope that Sokol - traditional place with history - will be alive again. Thank you for giving the community this chance.

This project is based on 3 different programs:
1.Reconstructions of premises
2.Community activities, organised and held in premises - fitness, theatre, dance classes, low cost lunch, after school activities - professionals who would run various activities will be paid but public entry would be free. Great offer for emerging professionals to offer the public "Come and try".
3.Associations, communities, sports clubs or ordinary people from the neighborhood can hire a hall for various celebrations or fundraising. Cost - only a refundable bond! Communities who do not have their own building can build up a future partnership with Sokol.

It is imperative that varied cultures are retained to enhance the multicultural rainbow of the Australian landscape.
The Czech and Slovak communities have integrated into the Australian way of life successfully and have contributed significantly to the integration of migrants to the Australian community. Sokol is the hub and centre of all activities pertaining to the cultural heritage and tradition. In order that these important activities may continue it is urgently required that upgrades and refurbishment of this facility be carried out. Although the Czech and Slovak community conduct several fund raisers throughout the year to keep Sokol viable, it is not enough and Government assistance is urgently required.

Sokol is an important organization for maintaining Czech and Slovak culture . It provides a venue for social, music and drama performances. General community members of all ages are able to participate in many activities. The facilities require ongoing maintenance and improvements.

For many decades Sokol has been the community hub for the Czech and Slovak communities as well as the wider Australian community. It has performed a wide spectrum of extremely important programmes contributing significantly towards the successful settlement of Australians of Czech and Slovak backgrounds in Victoria and Australia. For the rapidly ageing Czechoslovak community the Sokol House is the only facility in Victoria providing comfort, information and support services for senior citizens in their first language. In addition, it caters for the educational and cultural needs of the young people by means of running language classes. Sokol premisses have always been made available to other community groups for wide variety of cultural and informal activities. The Melbourne Comedy Festival called Sokol home for many years.
The Sokol premisses are in urgent need of upgrading. To this date Sokol has relied entirely on voluntary help by many of its members to cover maintenance and running costs. Thus self-help has been evident since the establishment of Sokol so many years ago. The Government assistance would demonstrate clearly its appreciation of self-help and of the importance of this facility in our multicultural society.

So much history, so many stories, lots of good will and great community aspirations - beyond the Czechs and Slovaks who have worked hard to make Australia our home - and Sokol the heart of it!

Since its establishment, Sokol is the place for Czechs and Slovaks to meet. Apart from cultural actions, it organises language classes for kids, and meals for the retired. It is also a venue for various undertakings of the local community.
It needs support to keep going.
