The Commemorative Display will feature interactive displays on many female aviators from Victoria who have contributed greatly to aviation from the time flight became common to today's commercial pilots. The centrepiece of the display is the restored DH60 Moth, "Diana", owned and flown by Nancy Lyle, the second Australian woman to gain her pilots licence and the first aircraft to deliver copies of the Herald Newspaper.
The project will focus also those who worked at the Fishermans Bed factories during the war and beyond, contributing to the aviation industry. On display at the Museum for two years, possibly permanent.
The project recognises and celebrates women in aviation and related industry and should be seen as a huge inspiration to those who are looking to enter the industry. Local community will benefit via tourists and visitors (we have always seen significant spike in visitor numbers when new displays opened).
As Moorabbin Airport is the third busiest in Australia, it would be an ideal display to act as incentive to draw people in to start their careers in that precinct. It is often overlooked just how important women have been to Australian aviation and this display will redress that issue.
