The grant will be used to purchase new, portable shelves to provide more opportunity for a variety of events, programs and activities held in the space. These shelves will also better display the library collection making items easier to discover and access. This will enhance the usability of Castlemaine Library for patrons, encouraging independence and confidence when visiting. To support these improvements and the many more resources and services offered at the library, repairs to the flooring are needed to help maintain and look after the well-used, historical building.

The Castlemaine Library receives over 12,000 visits a month and is valued highly by the community. Along with repairing the library floor to ensure the safe delivery of services, obtaining moveable library shelving will provide a flexible and functional solution for current and future needs, and allow the library to be responsive to all the ways our space gets used – from children’s sessions to author talks, school holiday programs and creative workshops.

I love the Castlemaine Library. It is a great place to browse for reading materials and DVDs. The staff are absolutely brilliant; helpful with a cheery word hear and there.
Personally, I think our library (Castlemaine, that is), should be a whole big new one.... I have seen some new libraries around the state (Sale, which has a similar population to Castlemaine and Mildura. Both of these new libraries are fantastic, with inclusions such as a swimming pool and information centre (Mildura) and an art gallery and information centre (Sale). Whilst new carpet would be terrific, what would be even better would be a brand new library in Castlemaine, which could include a heated pool alongside and the information centre in between... and we have a really fantastic site (where the old hospital used to be), which would be perfect in all ways. Plenty of space for the buildings and plenty of space for parking and plenty of space for grass and treees.

It is a remarkable library, always busy sometimes crowded e.g. for Story Times. So moveable shelving would greatly improve flexible use of the space.

Public Libraries are one of the best civil innovations of the past 150 years. Think of all the people who can read and educate themselves thanks to FREE public Libraries - not to mention their importance to the community as a Hub and resource
