Melbourne has a thriving performing arts community, and while our city has many large theatres, there is a lack of small and affordable spaces to perform in. Our vision is to convert an existing arts space (pictured) into a black-box theatre. A black-box theatre is an empty shell but with all the necessary theatre tools, including sprung floor and tarket, theatre lights, sound (including sound desk), and retractable theatre seating for 128 people (using local suppliers and labourers). This type of theatre is accessible to a wide range of performers and provides a great boost to the local arts facilities.

This theatre will provide performance opportunities for the community in dance, cabaret, theatre, music theatre, and music recitals. Not only does it support the arts community, it provides the local community with ongoing performances/community events to attend. The location of the proposed theatre is between Armadale train station and High Street, providing easy access for locals and performers. Victorian Government support through Pick My Project will help keep set-up costs low, thereby providing the community with an affordable performance space, making it home to both local established performers, and providing an exciting performance opportunity for our next generation of artists.

Independent theatre is blossoming in Melbourne.
To have an affordable venue in the inner south east would be such an asset to the performing arts industry and community of Stonnington.

What a wonderful project. This area of Melbourne requires more community theatres. There are so many wonderful dance projects around that find it hard to find great spaces to perform. We wish you all the best with this application.
