This project was the idea of a group of indigenous students I work with at Lalor Secondary College. They meet to discuss cultural issues and their place in the school community. We want to plant a kitchen garden using both regular vegetables and bush tucker plants. To give a centre to this garden we want to have an art project with a community artist to lead us to build and decorate a bush oven shaped like Bunjil the eagle and our spiritual creator. The older members of our community will use the garden with us outside school hours.

The garden will be a meeting place for old and young members of our community. Our local Wurundjeri elders through Whittlesea Shire Council Reconciliation Group support the project and will partner with us giving us their expertise.
The garden will also benefit the school community as a new garden area will be created on disused land. All students will learn about the growing, harvesting and preparation of bush tucker through the year 9 and 10 food technology curriculum. All students can enjoy the garden with us and learn from us.

Excellent project idea!! As a Koorie artist, educator and former teacher I think this project would have a huge impact on the wellbeing on Indigenous students and will offer so much to the entire student body, staff and school community for education, collaboration and learning from an Indigenous perspective in a hands on way.

I used to teach at Keon Park Tech ages ago and I wish there'd been something like that in those days!
