Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association works with the largest Indigenous Community in the east of Melbourne with a culturally safe and culturally responsive space to access programs and services. One of these programs is called 'Tucker Bag'. With the support of wonderful volunteers this program provides food for up to 170 people experiencing food insecurity. Our community would like HICSA to expand the program to include the growing, harvesting and cooking techniques for edible indigenous plants and seedlings. HICSA will teach indigenous and non-indigenous people how to do this at home.
Drainage, pathways, garden beds and seedlings are required.
Sharing knowledge about indigenous plants, including propagation, harvesting and preparation for eating is a great way to share knowledge between indigenous and non-indigenous people. HICSA will hold classes where the whole community can come together to share stories and learn new skills that they that take back to their own gardens and kitchens.
Pathways will assist the community in accessing HICSA for programs. Currently the crushed rock and earth pathways become small creeks during winter and spring.
A small part of the area we could convert to a bush tucker garden, as shown in the photo that is attached.
