The social environment at RGYC is very welcoming and open and is a fantastic home for personal development, especially with with the challenge of sailing and the beautiful outdoor environment. Sounds like a fantastic project that could easily help improve the lives of many at- risk youths.

'Buoyed Up Geelong' will teach at-risk children (7-12 years) to sail as a way to build confidence, self-esteem, educational aspirations and social inclusion, while encouraging an active lifestyle utilizing our Corio Bay environment.
Initially targeting 5 Geelong primary schools, the sailing program will engage children from disadvantaged backgrounds in a unique fun-based opportunity, enhancing their general life skills and capabilities.
Residential Students from Deakin University's nearby Brougham House will be engaged in Instructor Training to act as leadership mentors, educational confidants and inspirational role models. Participating children may eventually train as Instructors and realise a vocational pathway or part-time employment.
The 'Buoyed Up Geelong' project aligns with the Barwon Regional Partnership’s priorities to improve the learning and development of vulnerable children in the early years, raise educational aspirations and improve educational engagement and achievement rates of school aged children in disadvantaged communities.
It provides a pathway for young people to access meaningful, sustainable future focused recreational pursuits and work opportunities. Inclusion in a community club, access to a unique sport and exposure to successful university role models helps to foster social inclusion and successful post school transitions for young people by addressing some factors which create barriers and entrench disadvantage.

Wow... giving our young disadvantaged and perhaps disengaged kids an opportunity to build some positive life skills in an activity that would usually be not available to them, and in a testing environment to boot. Also the inclusion of young uni students as leaders/ mentors. Sounds like a win all round. Early positive experiences and interactions are so important for influencing young mindsets (future grown ups)
Brilliant program. Putting children out on the water at the mercy of Mother Nature, and teaching them resilience, life skills and joy!!!
