Men from our community can attend to learn free basic cooking in a supportive environment. Each class is hands on, where participants will cook meals together, then sit and eat with the group. Those teaching will aim to “demystify the dark arts of the kitchen”, guiding these men through each cooking experience. Easy to follow written recipes of the meals made on the night, will be given to the participants. This supportive learning environment will provide social and networking opportunities, as well as empowering these men with the skills and enthusiasm to cook nutritious cost effective meals at home.

The Mansfield community has a significant depression and suicide rate of our men.
A recent study (Thompson 2017) identified these issues amongst this venerable group.
• lived alone
• loss of a significant other
• signs and symptoms suggestive of depression
• drank alcohol
• had poor nutrition
• had poor knowledge of basic cooking skills
• had thought about suicide
• were socially isolated and had poor social networks
• were loath to talk about their personal issues and not
encouraged to do so
This project will address some of these issues to improve their heath and wellbeing.

Great idea for those with a change of circumstances and no cooking skills.

We all like to eat? Some people can't cook to save the lives. This is a great idea and a great social activity.

I see this as a brilliant approach to reducing social isolation. It could help short-circuit the possibility of depression amongst older men living alone. It's needed in Mansfield!

This can turn social isolation around and be a way out of a downward spiral that some blokes don't even see coming!
Great initiative!
