When I found out about this place it was a big surprise, as I have never seen so many Japanese cherry trees in one spot anywhere else around Melbourne. Pastel pink blossoms in spring are breathtakingly beautiful. It is a special place, and has a potential to be enjoyed by more people in the community.

The Japanese Cherry Grove within Banksia Park was a gift from the Japanese Prime Minister in 1980 to celebrate the friendship between Japan and Victoria. Currently there is a volunteer group who look after the grove on behalf of Parks Victoria. Their activities include hand watering 70 trees as well as mulching, weeding, pruning and fertilising. To ensure that the Grove thrives into the future we wish to install a watering system to improve the health of the trees; to install park furniture to encourage the community to spend time within the Grove and install an all abilities walking track.
We are hoping that the Cherry Grove can be sustained into the future for the community to enjoy. It provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the friendship between Japan and Australia and encourages outdoor recreational activity.
We are hoping that the walking track will encourage people of all ages and abilities to spend time within the grove. It will provide a thriving space for future community events such as the Sakura Picnic Day and cherry blossom viewing. The sprinkler system will ensure the health of the trees and will help future plantings thrive.

This cherry grove is a gem on the banks of the Yarra. This project will protect and grow this valuable community asset. Although our family now lives a 20minute bike ride away we still visit the grove each spring to take in the splendour of the cherry blossoms in bloom.
They need to be preserved. Go to Japan and see how they are revered and looked after for hundreds of years!!
If you see those beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, you will feel how much important to keep up
this project going. We love cherry blosson, just we love Australia. They need to be well looked after.
A wonderful example of these beautiful trees. An automatic watering system would ensure the survival of these trees easing the workload of staff and volunteers.
Congratulations to all concerned for the ongoing restoration of this orchard, particularly as it was started as a gesture of goodwill and exchange from Japan.
A valuable and important open space area for the community with a spectacular show of cherry blossoms in spring.

What a wonderful idea I have never heard of it and would love to go there. I love cherry blossom trees and this area would be a beautiful and peaceful place to visit especially if the walking tracks made available to people with disabilities. Can anyone tell me where it is please?
