The objectives of the Autism ID and Lanyard project are to: - Create a safer environment for individuals with ASD and intellectual disabilities when travelling in the community. - Provide education for professionals, parents and carers about existing supports that can facilitate safe travelling for individuals with ASD. - Provide a public forum for the public transport operators and public safety authorities to understand the travel and safety needs for individuals with ASD and intellectual disability. CPSSN has created safety items with input from its members and the Victoria Police for individuals with intellectual disabilities to wear when travelling independently.

ASD is a lifelong condition that impacts on intellectual development. 1 in 100 Australians are diagnosed with ASD every year, with 6 special needs schools in Melbourne. Individuals with ASD experience a number of safety issues, when accessing the community such as:
- People may think that the individual is engaging in delinquent behaviour or being uncooperative because of their inability to communicate verbally.
- Exhibit heightened behaviour as sensory perceptions are over-stimulated
By choosing to wear the safety item, public authorities and transport operators can provide appropriate assistance to individuals with ASD. Products will be given away for free.

Great idea, I think it would be very helpful for police to be able to recognise the jigsaw design lanyard and understand why a person might be behaving they way they are and how to assist them.

a great idea. the average person often doesn't recognize that a person has an ID or ASD and more importantly they dont know how to respond appropriately or at all. we need to do everything we can to help make their lives easier and educate the uneducated.
