Dandenong has below average levels of vegetable consumption compared to the Victorian average and households are growing less food. Athol Primary is changing eating habits in their community by growing food and selling it at weekly community garden stalls.
This project seeks to expand the existing garden to maximise the food growing potential of the site and significantly increase nutrition within the community.
New water efficient food growing technology will reduce labour input while increasing production using 100% recycled materials.
The garden is open to the community weekly to view the garden and purchase food cheaply while increasing nutrition.

Expansion of the school farm program will reach 4 times the amount of people within the school and wider community as all current produce is bought and consumed weekly. Greater involvement with primary students targets the right demographic to adopt future healthier eating choices at the home and food bought from the school garden provides better nutrition for the entire community.
Food waste is composted and recycled to close the nutrient loop.
There is a waiting list for volunteers wanting to help this garden thrive and involvement with parents helps to address social and nutritional issues within the community.

What a great idea to get kids outside and learning to produce their own food, maybe it will get them eating brussel sprouts if they grow them themselves. :)
