Arts on Prescription (AOP) is a referral-based programme offering supported access to social, creative sessions in the local community. Creative activities can include:
• Fine art – painting and drawing
• Decorative design and handicraft – sewing, jewellery design, craft
• Performance arts – singing, drama
• Creative Writing
• Other – photography, animation
Aims of AOP
• Improve health and recovery through participation in social and creative opportunities
• Reduce social isolation by creating social interaction in a relaxed informal environment
• Influence social and cultural factors that have an impact on mental health outcomes
There is a need to support health in our community using new approaches.
• The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) say Australians are now presenting to their GP with mental health issues more than any other health concern.
• President of the RACGP Dr Bastian Seidel “mental health issues, including depression, mood disorders and anxiety, now dominate GPs’ time”
• The overall cost of supporting people with a mental illness to be at least $28.6 billion pa.
A similar project in the UK reports evidence of increase in quality of life, reduction in GPs visits, and hospital admissions.

Loneliness is a well know contributing factor of poor mental health and premature death. This idea will help combat this
What a wonderful initiative. Creativity and companionship can heal the soul and the mind.
Dealing with chronic illness is painful and lonely - so AOP is such a great way to relax, meet people and express your creativity - such a blessing
Thankyou!! I completely agree
I love this concept, with all health problems my opinion is that it’s much better to help the system fight the cause than to try and treat the symptoms. I guess in that respect AOP is vitamins for the soul.
Very well put, thankyou
Grow Well Girls!!
