We currently run a pilot program with 12 students from mt Evelyn Special Needs School. This program engages and encourages children to be active and is adapted to each child's individual needs to encourage an increased level of participation. In trials we've implemented this strategy with a 100% participation rate. We're hoping to extend this program to benefit more children within the Yarra valley, we need to upgrade safety equipment, pfd's, helmets, purchase more boats, currently we loan equipment from Melbourne. We have no gain financially, all payments go to qualified coaches from Melbourne. Our club provide equipment for free.
New safety equipment/boats will allow us to expand this program to benefit more children living with disability in the Yarra valley. There are few adaptive sports available in the Yarra valley that have the ability to accommodate 100% participation. Children with special needs have varied levels of mobility, fine motor skills. There's more opportunity for children who are high functioning to be involved in these adaptive programs. Our kayaking program offers the opportunity for children with very limited mobility and fine motor skills to engage in activity, have experiences too, closing the gap insuring inclusiveness for all children.
