We are a group of 10 Chin, Burmese refugee university students volunteering to help our community school kids and help parents who have English difficulties.

This project will be running every Monday and Wednesday during school terms (2018-2019). Our main purpose is to provide tutoring to young kids with English reading and writing, Mathematical problem solving and other educational activities.

With our community support program, we will assist our parents who have English difficulties with their utility bills issues or questions, making appointments & provide community guides to local social services eg. Hospital & Centrelink etc.

Our focus is to provide educational support for refugee students who often face financial disadvantages and language barriers. These obstacles were identified as the main cause of children in families with poor English language skill to reach their full potential. Parents in our community lack the skills in education and English language to provide help for their own children’s school needs coming from a refugee background.

I visited the program and was greatly impressed with the commitment and professionalism of the young tutors and the enthusiasm showed by the children. This program represents the positive contribution a newly emerging refugee community can provide to support their community members and help their children to make a long term contribution to Australia. Through assisting the children to learn and study, this program should be supported and acknowledged.

I have been privileged to learn this after school program and community support project which has been developed by the enthusiastic young university students group from newly arrived emerging community from refugee background and they got a heart to help young school kids from community with homework and other activities. This is the first ever self-initiated project by youths in Eastern Melbourne and it is really encouraging to see how strong they are committed to help others. They truly deserve the funding and continue their good work for many years.

I am the only Aussie on this team, and I feel privileged to be part of it. I have been tutoring Chin children in their homes and wondering how to group them together to tutor them more effectively. Now the community have done all of this themselves. They have chosen their tutors and materials well, and split the classes into manageable sizes. It is going really well after one month, and hoping it continues well beyond the project assessment date of 2019
