The African Community Expo is a street festival in Port Melbourne planned for early 2019.
As Melbourne's population grows each year, so does the local community of Africans, and its time to showcase their culture, music, food and lifestyles.
The festival will showcase many regions of Africa, encouraging community inclusion and education, and promoting friendships between an already multicultural community and newcomers from Africa.
The festival will start with street performances including music and dance, food trucks and vendors showcasing cuisine from East, West and Southern Afirca, and conclude with a dinner and presentations at the Port Melbourne Town Hall.
The local community is already multicultural, but lacks representation and a voice from the more recently arrived African Community.
There are misconceptions in the greater Melbourne metropolitan community surrounding African youth and attitudes, and this festival aims to break down some of those barriers by showcasing the true attitudes and culture of African communities in the City of Port Phillip.
Residents will have the opportunity to meet, learn from and socialize with African communities, fostering new community groups, business opportunities and friendships.
