Active Bystander workshops provide a place to practice safe and effective ways to interrupt violence and provide support and solidarity to those experiencing sexist, racist, Islamophobic or transphobic abuse. Beginning with a 'train-the-trainer' course, this program will resource a small team of experienced trainers to provide a minimum of 12 free and accessible Active Bystander workshops for over 150 people throughout metropolitan Melbourne. These workshops are unique in the range of theory and practice they draw from. This program builds upon the Respect Women: Call it Out campaign, VicHealth research and many community violence prevention and education campaigns.

Creative, community responses to violence can strengthen trust, resilience and safety for all of us. Training can renew people's sense of their own safety and capacity to act in safe and empowered ways.

Training in how to intervene, disrupt and prevent violence is in high demand by community groups, workers and individuals. Active Bystander Training helps build the capacity of individuals and communities to prevent and reduce violence in all its forms. This important program will support wider efforts to reduce family violence, sexual assault and racism.

This is an excellent and crucial project that is much needed in our community. As someone who has experienced physical abuse first hand when walking home one day, and seeing so many people who stood by and watched or kept walking hoping 'someone else will intervene' I am so glad to see this concept has been well-thought and hope this gets funded as it is so important that more people feel confident and comfortable to step up and step in.

Wow, what a significant project, to have people trained to know how to interrupt disorderly conduct on the streets will hopefully lead to less idle bystanders filming what's happening and lead to bystanders actually doing something to stop this behaviour and lead to safer streets for everyone..
