Our children need us to escape the lure of screens, to discover and explore another endeavour and pastime.

This pilot project will give 200 local families and 400 local schoolchildren opportunities for making everyday objects they can be proud of using recycled materials wherever possible. Local school children will spend the day in workshops immersed in making and woodworking in the context of Wurundjeri culture. There will be one-day workshops for children, parents/guardians to make something together: using recycled pallets to make wooden spoons, kennels, outdoor furniture; knitted scarves from upcycled jumpers; and also claywork, weaving, embroidery or sewing.

Children exposed to high levels of technology tend to think through things only superficially and don’t develop the ability to think critically or be creative. Let’s address this issue at a local level. This project seeks to do this. Children and your classmates, spend a day on Wurundjeri land making clapsticks. Adults, come with your son/daughter, niece/nephew, grandson/granddaughter and make something together in a free one-day workshop. Have a chat with other families over a homemade lunch. Be part of your community.
Go home proud having made something together you can use everyday. Help awaken the maker within.

It's about time we had an offering like this! Lose a little of the individual screen-time, and bring back meaningful, valuable and precious family & group interaction! It's all about community and involvement, and enjoying learning something of substance along the way!

A fantastic initiative Eleni. We need to play more with innovation and share our different perspectives so we can start solving tomorrows problems today :)

What could be better than community coming together to teach the next generation real skills. Good luck!

This sounds like a wonderful initiative, bring the local community together to learn new 'old' skills.

This would be a wonderful project in which skills can be shared by those who teach them and those who are learning -- and cross-generational cultural engagement through artisan activity -- overcomes many barriers.
